The New OMUMC Fellowship Hall

Swisher Hall

Celebrations on August 8 and 9
at Oak Meadow United Methodist Church, 2740 Hunter's Green

Oak Meadow United Methodist Church, at 2740 Hunter's Green, has recently completed an addition which will be an ideal meeting space for neighborhood events as well as receptions for weddings and funerals held in the church. An Open House will be held on Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with activities for all ages including games, crafts, and activities such as cookie decorating and face painting, Boy and Girl Scout group events, and refreshments. There will be tours of a recently co mpleted Eagle Scout project in the rear of the church which includes concrete benches forming a prayer garden with crushed rock underneath. Visitors may also view two large murals painted by Ivan McDougal. Ivan passed away in 2005, but some of his work is in the permanent collection of the McNay Art Museum. The community is invited to come and join the celebration, Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This new fellowship hall will be named Swisher Hall, in honor of Dale and Harriet Swisher. Dale, an engineer, was a long-time employee of the State Department. During his distinguished career, he and Harriet lived in many countries including Iran and Taiwan. Harriet, a certified teacher, often taught part-time at the US dependents' schools where her two daughters attended, as well as entertained guests involved with government business. Dale passed away several years ago, but Harriet, now 99 years old, lives at the Towers, a retirement community near Ft. Sam. She attends Sunday services

at Oak Meadow UMC regularly with assistance from her caregiver. She is still bright and alert and holds a special place in the hearts of the church members. Longtime OMUMC member, Bill Ridenour, who has worked with stained glass for over fifteen years, designed, cut out and put together a beautiful original stained glass window for the new building featuring the name, Swisher Hall. He designed the pattern on large paper sheets, and then cut the glass and surrounded it with metal. He is also making a large stained glass window that will be a combination of purchased colored glass pictures surrounded by his own designs. He hopes to complete this large window featuring Christ as the shepherd surrounded by symbols of the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John by January 2010. This talented craftsman has also made other stained glass windows for the church as well as several large hanging cloth banners for the sanctuary and contributed many stained glass craft objects for arts and craft fairs at the church. As part of its role in community outreach, the church has provided meeting space for two different homeowners associations, the Oak Meadow Women’s Club CPR life-saving class, self-defense classes for seniors, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts meetings, Mothers Day Out classes, and other programs. Work on the fellowship hall project began over a year ago. Other church improvements include enlarging and updating the kitchen and the pastor’s office/study. On Sunday, August 9 at 10:30 AM there will be a special Consecration Service with United Methodist District Superintendent, Rev. Virgilio Vazquez-Garza at the church.
