Adult Sunday School The
Book of Exodus Beginning February 9, 2003 1 When he came down from the mountain,
great crowds followed him;
2 and behold, a leper came to him and
knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean." 3 And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying,
"I will; be clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to
any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses
commanded, for a proof to the people."
Matthew 8:1-4 (RSV) What was the gift that Moses had commanded?
Why did Jesus assume that not only the priest in the Temple but also the
leper would know what he meant by this brief reference to Moses?
If we fail to read the Old Testament, the scriptural reservoir of Jesus,
how are we to understand the New Testament, which was written after Jesus was
crucified? Come and join us for a careful and thoughtful reading of the Book of
Exodus. Learn about foundational events in the history of Israel and discover
how they shaped a people. Though an
attentive exploration of the Book of Exodus, we hope to make you more familiar
with the Bible, and to equip and encourage you to study on your own or to teach
others. Our class is taught primarily through a reading of and commentary on the
text. We normally cover one chapter each week.
Aside from this, there is no rigid structure.
We aim for a healthy mix of serious thought and laughter, and our recent
trek through Genesis provided much of both.
As we tease the text, we are often surprised by how clearly it speaks and
by how much it has to say.
Your presence is the only class requirement.
Beyond that, you determine your level of participation, which can range
from silence to as much as you want to ask or say.
That is up to you. You will
not be asked to answer questions or to read in class.
Questions are encouraged, but will not be asked of you.
You will not be put on the spot. You
may engage at the level that you find most suitable.
A copy of the text will be provided. We begin at 9 and end at 10 so that choir members can prepare for church
and others might socialize or pursue further ideas raised during class. We are asking you to give our adult Sunday school class a try.
As part of our effort to revitalize our church, let us begin with what we
have. In its current form the adult
Sunday school class is two years old. There
is ample room for more participants. For
